Interim Executive Headteacher and Principal
Groups running several specialist settings face a leadership problem single schools do not. When an executive leader goes, the gap is not in one school. It is in the layer that holds consistency, quality and compliance across all of them, and that layer is usually invisible until it is missing.
What is an executive headteacher?
An executive headteacher or principal leads across more than one setting. They line manage the heads of each school rather than running one directly, and they carry responsibility for quality, compliance and consistency across the group. In independent special school and AP groups the title varies, but the accountability is broadly the same.
What is the difference between an executive headteacher and a head of school?
A head of school leads one setting day to day. An executive head holds several, sets the standard between them, and is usually the person a proprietor or board looks to for an honest picture of how each school is performing. The two roles need genuinely different experience, which is why appointing a strong head into an executive vacancy does not always work.
When do providers need an interim executive leader?
- An executive head, principal or director of education leaves at short notice
- A provider has acquired schools and needs experienced oversight through integration
- One setting in the group is in difficulty and needs senior attention without destabilising the others
- The group is preparing for inspection across multiple registrations
- Growth has outpaced the central structure and somebody needs to build it
- A board has lost confidence in the picture it is being given and wants an independent view
From our experience
Groups often try to cover an executive gap by asking a strong head to hold two schools. It tends to work for about half a term. After that both schools usually slip, and the group has two problems instead of one.
What does an interim executive headteacher do?
- Holds quality and consistency across the settings in the group
- Line manages heads and supports those who are new or struggling
- Checks compliance setting by setting, including each registration
- Reports to the proprietor, owners or trustees with an honest assessment
- Leads integration where schools have recently been acquired
- Builds or repairs the central structure the group has outgrown
How many days a week does an interim executive headteacher work?
Executive placements are frequently three or four days a week rather than five, which often suits both sides. What matters more than the number of days is that the interim is in each setting often enough to form their own view rather than relying on what they are told from a distance.
How long do executive interim placements last?
Usually two to three terms, longer than a single school placement, because the work is structural rather than operational. Building a central quality system or integrating an acquisition takes longer than steadying one school.
Good practice during an interim executive period
- A genuine review of every setting in the first month, not a tour
- Heads told clearly who they report to and what will not change
- Compliance positions confirmed school by school rather than assumed centrally
- A single honest written picture of the group handed to the substantive appointment
- Agreement up front about what the interim may decide without going back to the board
A common misconception about interim executive leadership
Boards sometimes assume an interim at this level will spend the placement reviewing rather than leading, and that they will be handed a report instead of getting a job done. A good interim executive does review in the first month, because they cannot hold quality across settings they do not understand. But the review is the means rather than the point. What you should expect by the end is a group that runs more consistently, not a document about one that does not.
Questions for proprietors and boards
- If our executive leader left, who would hold quality across the group next term?
- Do we know which of our settings would withstand an inspection this month?
- Is our central structure sized for the group we are now, or the group we were?
- Are we getting an honest picture from each school, or a reassuring one?
