Independent School Standards Not Met Support

Receiving a report that says some of the independent school standards are not met is hard. Most proprietors and headteachers we speak to were working flat out before the inspection, and the report can feel like a verdict on all of that effort.

It isn’t. It is a clear list of what needs to change, and every school in this position has a route back to meeting the standards. Our role is to help you find that route quickly and calmly, in a way that leaves the school stronger for its pupils.

What happens when independent school standards are not met?

The Department for Education (DfE) is the registration authority for independent schools, so it decides what happens next. It will often require the school to write an action plan setting out how every unmet standard will be put right.

The DfE can then commission Ofsted to carry out a progress monitoring inspection. These visits are normally unannounced. Inspectors check whether the standards that were unmet are now met, and whether the action plan is being carried out on time.

One point surprises many leaders. Ofsted will explain clearly why a standard is not met, but it does not give advice on how to meet it. That is the gap we fill.

Why the independent school standards matter

It’s understandable that the standards can feel like a long list of paperwork. In practice, each one protects something that matters to children: a curriculum that prepares them well, teaching that meets their needs, safe recruitment, a premises that is fit for purpose and leaders who keep all of it under review.

When a school puts unmet standards right properly, the benefit is felt in classrooms and corridors, not just in the next report.

How we help schools after an inspection

Making sense of the report

We sit down with you and go through the findings line by line. We separate the quick fixes from the deeper work, so you know where to put your energy first.

An action plan the DfE can accept

We help you write a plan that covers every unmet paragraph, with clear actions, named owners, realistic dates and success criteria you can measure. These are the same tests inspectors use when they evaluate a school’s action plan.

Extra leadership capacity

Where a school needs it, we place an experienced consultant or interim headteacher, DSL or SENCO, so improvement does not depend on one exhausted leader.

Policies and records that work in practice

We review your policies, website, single central record and other required documents against the standards, then help you put any gaps right.

Improving practice, not just paperwork

Many unmet standards sit in curriculum, teaching, behaviour or safeguarding culture. We work alongside staff to change what happens day to day.

Support for proprietors

Inspectors meet the proprietor on every visit and judge the quality of leadership and management. We help proprietors understand their responsibilities and show the oversight inspectors look for.

Checking progress before inspectors return

Our ISS compliance health check gives you an independent view of where you stand against every standard, so the progress monitoring inspection holds no surprises.

Good Practice

Schools that recover well usually treat the report as a starting point rather than a threat. They share the findings honestly with staff, give each action a named owner and review progress every few weeks with the proprietor. They keep evidence as they go, so they can show impact rather than describe it.

From Our Experience

We often see schools put most of their effort into rewriting policies, because that feels like quick, visible progress. The schools that meet the standards at their next visit are the ones that also check those policies are understood and followed. Inspectors talk to pupils and staff, and that is where implementation shows.

A common misconception

“If we update the policies, we will meet the standards.” A policy is necessary, but it is rarely enough on its own. Inspectors look at how it works in practice, and several standards, such as those on teaching and safeguarding, can only be met through what happens every day.

Questions for proprietors and leaders

  • Does every unmet standard in our report have a named owner and a date?
  • How would we know, with evidence, that each action has worked?
  • Do staff understand what has changed and why?
  • Has anything new emerged since the inspection that we have not yet addressed?
  • Could we explain our progress confidently if inspectors arrived tomorrow?

Frequently asked questions

Will we be told when Ofsted is coming back?

Normally not. Progress monitoring inspections are usually unannounced. In exceptional cases, a school may be called up to 30 minutes before inspectors arrive.

Will inspectors only look at the standards we did not meet?

They focus on those, but they always check the safeguarding policy and how it is implemented. If they find new concerns, they can inspect other standards too.

Can Ofsted tell us how to put things right?

No. Ofsted explains the evidence behind each judgement but does not advise on how to meet the standards. Many schools use external support for this reason.

What if some standards are still not met?

The DfE decides what action to take. Every school’s circumstances are different, so it is worth getting advice early rather than waiting for the next visit.

Do you work with ISI inspected schools?

Yes. The independent school standards apply to every independent school, and we support schools inspected by Ofsted and by ISI.
