When governance fails, fractures, or simply cannot meet the moment, schools and trusts need rapid, expert intervention to restore stability and drive improvement. Interim governance arrangements and Interim Executive Boards (IEBs) are powerful, time-limited solutions, but they only work when the people involved bring deep experience, sound judgement, and the authority to act. Our interim governance support brings exactly those qualities, at exactly the moments they are needed most.
We support schools, trusts, local authorities, and Regional Directors with interim governance and IEB arrangements.
Interim governance support places experienced, senior education professionals into governance roles for a defined period to stabilise, challenge, and improve a school or trust. This includes Interim Executive Boards established by a local authority or the Secretary of State, interim chairs and members, and bespoke interim arrangements where a governing body or trust board needs urgent strengthening.
We supply chairs, members, and full IEBs, and we provide skilled mentoring, training, and transition support to substantive boards when the time comes to hand back.
It is designed for local authorities, multi-academy trusts, regional directors, dioceses, and individual schools that need to put strong interim governance in place. It is most often used following an inadequate inspection, a serious safeguarding concern, governance failure, a major incident, or the loss of board capacity at a critical moment.
We provide a flexible range of interim governance support, including:
When governance is in crisis, time matters. We place experienced people quickly so the school or trust has steady, credible leadership at board level from the very start.
Interim chairs and members combine high-level scrutiny with genuine support for school leaders. They know what good looks like and how to get there.
A respected, experienced interim board sends a clear signal that the situation is being handled professionally. Confidence begins to rebuild from day one.
Our interim members understand what inspection looks for, what the renewed framework requires, and how to hold leaders to account against both.
Interim periods often require unpopular decisions — about staffing, structure, or strategy. Experienced interim members make those decisions with care, evidence, and authority.
An IEB is a bridge. We use the interim period to design the substantive governance arrangements that follow, including skills mix, recruitment, and induction.
Our interim members understand the formal reporting expectations and produce the evidence and updates required without distracting from the work itself.
Across the work, you receive:
— We mobilise quickly with senior people who can step into difficult situations.
— We understand the IEB framework, Article 8 powers, and academy intervention routes in detail.
— Our interim work is always planned with a strong substantive future in mind.
Our interim members are former headteachers, executive leaders, experienced trustees, and senior education professionals. They have served on substantive and interim boards, navigated intervention, and supported schools through some of their most difficult moments. That blend of authority and humanity is what interim governance demands.
We support settings of every type across England and internationally.
