Learning Walks & Teaching Drop-Ins

Teacher with parents and child in a school or trust.

You can’t improve teaching you can’t see. Learning walks and drop-ins give a live picture of what’s happening in classrooms across your school, day to day. Done developmentally rather than as a grading exercise, they build an honest view of teaching and where it can be stronger. We carry them out independently and constructively.

What Is Learning Walks & Teaching Drop-Ins?

It’s a series of short, focused visits to lessons across your school, building a picture of teaching and learning as it really happens. We look for agreed themes, talk to pupils where it helps, and triangulate what we see with work and plans. We don’t grade individual lessons; we look for patterns.

It gives you a live, honest view of teaching across the school, free from internal bias, with clear themes to build on rather than judgements on individuals.

Who Is It For?

It’s designed for all education settings: maintained schools, academies, and multi-academy trusts, Alternative Provisions, and SEND Units/Hubs. Headteachers, senior leaders, and subject leaders use it to see teaching across the school and identify shared strengths and priorities.

Many schools ask for it to evaluate a teaching focus, prepare for inspection, or get an honest, outside view of classroom practice.

What Does It Cover?

We shape the work around your priorities. You can have a broad review or a tight focus. Our most common areas include:

  • A live picture of teaching across the school
  • Consistency of practice between classrooms
  • Agreed teaching and learning themes
  • How pupils are engaging and learning
  • The learning environment and climate
  • How teaching lands for different pupil groups
  • Patterns and shared priorities, not individual grades
  • How what we see triangulates with work and voice

How This Helps Your School, Academy, Trust, or Alternative Provision

1

See teaching as it really is

We give you an honest, live view of classroom practice across the school, not a rehearsed one.

2

Find shared themes

We look for patterns, so you can focus development where it will have the biggest impact.

3

Check consistency

We see how practice varies between classrooms, so you can close gaps and share strengths.

4

Develop without grading

We look developmentally, so staff engage with improvement rather than fearing judgement.

5

Prepare for inspection

We give leaders a realistic view of what inspectors would see, and time to act.

6

Model good practice

We can help your leaders learn to carry out learning walks well themselves.

7

Support every group

We look at how teaching lands for all pupils, so no group is being underserved.
