Supporting a Material Change

Supporting a Material Change from Jarvis Education

Independent schools can’t just change key details and carry on. If you want to change your age range, admit boarders, start taking pupils with SEND, move site, or change proprietor, you have to apply to the DfE for approval first. This is called a material change, and you can’t make the change until the Secretary of State says yes. Get the application wrong and you face delay, a difficult inspection, or a refusal. We help you get it right the first time.

What Is a Material Change?

A material change is a significant change to your registered details that needs DfE approval before you make it. It covers things like changing your age range, admitting boarders, starting or stopping SEND provision, changing sex of intake, moving premises, or a change of proprietor. The DfE checks whether you’ll still meet the Independent School Standards once the change is in place, and may commission an inspection before deciding.

We guide you through the whole process, from working out whether your change is material to preparing an application that stands up to scrutiny.

Who Is Material Change Support For?

It’s designed for all independent schools: association schools inspected by ISI, non-association schools inspected by Ofsted, and independent special schools. Proprietors, heads, and business managers use our support when they’re planning growth, restructuring, moving site, or changing what the school offers.

Many schools come to us early, before they submit anything, so the application is right from the start. Others come to us when a change is already underway and they need a steady, expert hand.

What Does Material Change Support Include?

We support you across the whole process. You can choose full support or help with a specific part. Our most common areas include:

  • Checking whether your proposed change is actually material
  • Preparing and reviewing your application to the DfE
  • Making sure you’ll still meet the Independent School Standards
  • Getting your policies, premises, and records ready
  • Preparing your leaders and staff for a material change inspection
  • Change of proprietor applications and supporting documents
  • Change of age range, site, or admissions
  • Adding or removing boarding or SEND provision
  • Planning timelines so you don’t implement the change too early

How Material Change Support Helps Your School, Academy, Trust, or Alternative Provision

1

Get the application right first time

A weak or incomplete application means delay, and sometimes refusal. We help you prepare a clear, complete submission that answers what the DfE needs. This gives you the best chance of approval without wasted time.

2

Know whether your change is even material

Some changes need approval and some don’t, and getting this wrong is costly. We tell you exactly where your plans sit. You avoid both unnecessary applications and the serious risk of making a change without approval.

3

Stay on the right side of the rules

Making a material change without approval can lead to removal from the register. We keep you compliant at every step, so you never implement a change too early. This protects your registration and your reputation.

4

Be ready for inspection

The DfE often commissions an inspection before approving a change. We prepare your policies, premises, and staff so you meet the standards on the day. This makes the inspection smoother and far less stressful.

5

Support your leaders

A material change adds a heavy load onto an already busy team. We take on the detail and guide your decisions. This gives your leaders clear steps and the confidence to get it done.

6

Support better decisions

You get clear facts, not guesswork. Leaders can plan timelines, costs, and staffing based on what the process really involves. This makes your planning stronger and more realistic.

7

Protect your pupils and your school

Every change has to keep pupils safe and well provided for. We make sure welfare, safety, and standards stay front and centre. This protects your pupils and the school you’ve built.
