Throughout his career, Mike has gained extensive expertise in leading and managing all aspects of school improvement. His exceptional contributions were recently recognised when he was nominated for the Hampshire Education Award for 'Outstanding Contribution to Education in Hampshire' in July 2023, following a distinguished 12-year tenure as Headteacher of Harrow Way Community School. As headteacher, Mike placed great importance on cultivating a positive school culture and climate, understanding that these two elements are critical to the overall success of a school. Taken together, the more positive the culture and climate you create, the more likely your staff team are to go the extra mile, often referred to as "discretionary effort." When the environment fosters a sense of belonging, support, and shared values, it motivates individuals to contribute beyond their basic responsibilities. Additionally, getting the culture and climate right significantly impacts staff retention, as a positive atmosphere influences individuals' intentions to stay at the school. This, in turn, plays a crucial role in improving overall retention rates and ensuring continuity and stability within the school community. He is designated as Specialist Leader of Education (SLE) and Local Leader of Education (LLE). His past roles include serving as a data consultant for the SSAT and as a Leadership and Learning Partner (LLP) with local authorities. He has also mentored new headteachers in Hampshire. Mike also contributes as a co-opted governor in a Hampshire secondary school.
